Emma Chichester Clark lahir di London tahun 1955 tetapi tinggal di Irlandia sampai tahun 1975. Ia meneruskan sekolahnya di Chelsea School of Art tahun 1975-78 dan kemudian mengambil kelas di Royal College of Art, tahun 1980-83 dimana ia diajar oleh Quentin Blake.
Emma pernah bekerja lepas sebagai illustrator di berbagai majalah termasuk New Scientist, Cosmopolitan dan The Sunday times; ia juga pernah mengilustrasi berbagai cover buku. Hasil karynya dipamerkan di the Thumb Gallery tahun 1984-1987.
Emma memenangkan Mother Goose Award di tahun 1988 sebagai newcomer yang paling exciting di bagian ilustrasi buku anak-anak.
